Ghoulcaller Gisa turns one high-power creature into a Zombie board. The first checks are haste or untap support, a legal sacrifice target, power scaling, Zombie payoffs, recursion, and whether Thornbite Staff combo prerequisites are actually present.

Commander Overview

How This Commander Plays

Ghoulcaller Gisa is a five-mana mono-black Human Wizard whose activated ability costs {B}, tapping Gisa, and sacrificing another creature. She creates Zombie tokens equal to that creature's power, so the default plan is converting one large body into a wide Zombie board, then using combat, Typal payoffs, sacrifice engines, recursion, or a verified Thornbite Staff loop.

Core Game Plan

  1. Accelerate into Gisa.
  2. Protect her or grant haste.
  3. Deploy a high-power sacrifice target.
  4. Activate at a safe window.
  5. Convert the Zombie board.
  6. Recur the sacrificed creature.
  7. Finish through combat, aristocrats, or combo.

Build Paths

Power-to-Tokens

Use high-power creatures or power boosts so one Gisa activation creates a large Zombie board.

This is the default build and depends most on Gisa surviving long enough to tap.
Zombie Typal

Turn Gisa's Zombie batches into lord-backed pressure, Zombie cards, and mass-recursion turns.

Typal payoff is downstream from Gisa's token output, not the same as power conversion.
Aristocrats Tokens

Convert the initial sacrifice and later Zombie deaths into cards, drain, mana, and forced sacrifices.

This branch cares less about combat and more about controlled death timing.
Thornbite Combo

Attach Thornbite Staff, add Phyrexian Altar, and ensure Zombies have at least 3 power before looping.

Unbuffed 2/2 Zombies do not produce the same token-positive line.

The reviewed Thornbite Staff line needs Gisa, Phyrexian Altar, a real Zombie power boost such as Bad Moon, starting black mana, and an initial sacrifice creature.
