Y'shtola is now an established Esper control-combo commander. Three compact combo families are enough for a Bracket 4 build: Citadel-Top, Oracle-Consultation, and Kitten-Teferi-Sol Ring. The stronger upgrade path is usually protection, tutor quality, card selection, mana efficiency, and clear outlets rather than a fourth combo family.
Core Game Plan
- Trade resources early with cheap interaction even when those spells do not trigger Y'shtola.
- Resolve Y'shtola when the deck can immediately convert noncreature spells into pressure or cards.
- Use free high-mana-value interaction to answer threats while preserving mana for selection and protection.
