Commander Overview

How This Commander Plays

Teval, the Balanced Scale is a verified existing Zombies candidate because the deck repeatedly turns cards leaving your graveyard into tapped Zombie tokens while also supporting self-mill, land recursion, reanimation, graveyard-cast engines, and Zombie payoff cards.

Core Game Plan

  1. For high-Bracket-3 optimization, choose one board-based finish, one primary recursive combo family, and one compact noncombat outlet.
  2. Fill your graveyard with lands, creatures, and cards that can return or be cast later.
  3. Attack with Teval to mill three and return a land card tapped.
  4. Use separate graveyard-exit events to create Zombie tokens over multiple turns.
  5. Turn Zombie tokens into mana, sacrifice material, convoke help, or a finishing board.
  6. Avoid overstuffing Skeleton, Tortured Existence, Six, Gravecrawler, Hulk, and Kheru packages unless the list clearly names the refund, outlet, and payoff for each.
  7. Keep Zombie payoff evidence separate from generic Reanimator, Tokens, Aristocrats, and Lands cards.

Build Paths

Zombie token value

Use Teval, Tormod, Welcome the Dead, Field of the Dead, and token finishers to make Zombie bodies matter.

Counts for Zombies only when token production or Zombie payoffs shape construction.
Lands and graveyard exits

Use self-mill, land recursion, and land plays from graveyard to trigger Teval while building mana.

This overlaps Lands and Reanimator but does not replace Zombies Typal evidence.
Reanimation support

Use stocked graveyards and Zombie tokens to support Dread Return, Victimize, Living Death, and creature recovery.

Reanimation is a Strategy overlap, not the reason Teval qualifies for Zombies.
Bracket 3 tuned combo

Pick one verified loop from Skeleton, Tortured Existence, or Six plus Circle of the Land Druid, then add one compact outlet that actually wins.

A loop that only makes triggers is an engine until Altar of Dementia, Syr Konrad, Yawgmoth, Jarad, or an aristocrat payoff turns it into.

Verified deterministic combo engines are Teval plus Reassembling Skeleton plus Phyrexian Altar, Teval plus Tortured Existence plus Phyrexian Altar, and Teval plus Six plus Circle of the Land Druid plus Phyrexian Altar. Each still.
