Commander Overview

How This Commander Plays

The Ur-Sphinx is a preview-state {6}{W}{U}{B} 10/10 Legendary Creature -- Sphinx Avatar. Eminence discounts other Sphinx spells by {1} from the command zone or battlefield, and whenever one or more Sphinxes it controls attack, each player mills that many cards and may cast one of their own milled cards without paying its mana cost.

Core Game Plan

  1. Use the command-zone Eminence discount before The Ur-Sphinx is even cast.
  2. Fix Esper (WUB) mana for a demanding three-color curve.
  3. Deploy Sphinxes ahead of curve using stacked cost reduction.
  4. Protect and ramp toward the nine-mana commander itself.
  5. Attack wide with Sphinxes to scale the mill trigger.
  6. Mill every player and cast up to one eligible free card per player.
  7. Repeat the attack step each combat to keep converting board width into free spells.

Build Paths

Sphinx Typal Cost-Reduction

Stack Eminence with Unesh and Urza's Incubator so expensive Sphinxes arrive well ahead of their printed cost.

The payoff is curve speed, not raw card advantage -- cheaper Sphinxes attack sooner and more often.
Wide-Attack Free-Cast Engine

Maximize the number of attacking Sphinxes each combat (including type-changed non-Sphinxes) to mill and free-cast as many cards as possible.

Unlike typical mill or theft decks, the payoff scales with attacker count declared, not with combat damage dealt or a single targeted opponent.
Self-Mill Adjacent (Build-Path Only)

Because every player -- including you -- mills, a deck can lean into the graveyard cards it mills into its own library, but this file does not claim.

This is recorded as context, not as an independently supported Strategy relationship.

No exact Commander Spellbook record requiring The Ur-Sphinx was found as of this 2026-09-18 research pass. That negative result is preserved below rather than replaced with an invented combo.
