Bracket 4 / Combo Lines: Blazing Sunsteel self-damage loop

Verified

Unbounded noncombat damage events and Treasure creation while each Blazing Sunsteel trigger keeps targeting Smaug; choose another legal target to stop converting the loop into Smaug damage.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug is on the battlefield.
  • Blazing Sunsteel is attached to Smaug.
  • A noncombat damage starter can legally damage Smaug.

Cast Smaug, equip Blazing Sunsteel for {4}, then cast Chain Lightning for {R} or use another starter.

Sequence

  1. Cast Chain Lightning targeting Smaug, or start with another noncombat damage source.
  2. Smaug is dealt noncombat damage and triggers to create that many Treasures.
  3. Blazing Sunsteel also triggers because the equipped creature was dealt damage.
  4. Resolve the Sunsteel trigger targeting Smaug.
  5. Repeat the Smaug and Sunsteel triggers while Smaug remains on the battlefield.

Interruption Points

  • Remove Smaug, remove Blazing Sunsteel, prevent damage, counter the starter spell, or respond before the Sunsteel trigger resolves.
  • Exile, bounce, and sacrifice effects still answer Smaug because indestructible does not stop them.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug is the indestructible damage recipient that turns each noncombat damage event into Treasures.

Timing: Chain Lightning is sorcery speed. Equip is sorcery speed unless another effect attaches Blazing Sunsteel.

Rules notes: Blazing Sunsteel makes the equipped creature deal the reflected damage, so Smaug can be the source and the target. This line is deterministic after attachment and a legal starter damage event, but it is not a casual value line. Only noncombat damage triggers: Smaug creates Treasures only when he is dealt noncombat damage. Combat damage dealt to Smaug does not trigger the ability. Treasure count follows damage actually dealt: The Treasure count equals damage actually dealt to Smaug after prevention and replacement effects are applied. Indestructible limits only some answers: Indestructible does not prevent damage. It also does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice effects, or lethal -X/-X toughness reduction. Separate damage events: Separate noncombat damage events trigger Smaug separately, which matters for Pyrohemia, Pestilence, Mayhem Devil, and copied Chain Lightning lines. Exact Spellbook combo records: Mayhem Devil plus one Treasure, Chain Lightning with {R}{R}{R}, and Pyrohemia are tracked as Spellbook-backed records. Pyrohemia stays near-infinite unless life totals, prevention, or life gain are solved. Raw loop labels for review: Pestilence variants, Volcano Hellion with Pariah's Shield, Dizzying Gaze, Cut Propulsion, and Scrapheap preserve private review labels until every prerequisite, interruption point, and card identity is resolved. Chandra's Ignition placement: Chandra's Ignition makes Smaug deal damage to other creatures and opponents. It does not deal damage to Smaug, so it is a payoff line instead of a direct Treasure trigger. Two Smaug commanders: Smaug the Impenetrable and Smaug the Magnificent are different cards with different deck plans and version checks. No market shortcut: EDHREC percentages do not prove sell-through, seller loss, price movement, inventory pressure, marketplace agreement, or Pricing Confidence.

Infinite

Commander Spellbook 1678-7839: Mayhem Devil Treasure replacement loop

Verified

Infinite colored mana plus repeated Treasure entry, leave, and sacrifice triggers. Add Mirkwood Bats, Reckless Fireweaver, Disciple of the Vault, or another payoff to win through the loop.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug and Mayhem Devil are on the battlefield.
  • You control at least one Treasure to sacrifice.
  • A payoff such as Mirkwood Bats or Reckless Fireweaver is needed to convert the loop into opponent life loss or damage.

Requires Smaug, Mayhem Devil, and at least one Treasure or equivalent sacrifice starter.

Sequence

  1. Sacrifice a Treasure for mana.
  2. Mayhem Devil triggers from the sacrificed permanent.
  3. Resolve Mayhem Devil targeting Smaug.
  4. Smaug is dealt 1 noncombat damage and creates one Treasure.
  5. Repeat with the replacement Treasure.

Interruption Points

  • Remove Smaug or Mayhem Devil before the trigger resolves.
  • Stop the damage to Smaug or remove the payoff before the repeated Treasure events matter.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug replaces each sacrificed Treasure by creating one Treasure from the Mayhem Devil damage.

Timing: Treasure mana abilities can start the loop whenever you have priority or a cost to pay; the damage and Treasure replacement use triggered abilities.

Rules notes: Mayhem Devil does not sacrifice permanents itself; a Treasure or another sacrifice source is the required starter. This is a deterministic combo with a starting Treasure, but the damage-to-opponents finish requires a payoff or a separate outlet. Infinite

Commander Spellbook 210-7839: Chain Lightning self-copy Treasure loop

Verified

Infinite Treasures, infinite colored mana, repeated magecraft triggers, and repeated artifact entry, leave, and sacrifice triggers.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug is on the battlefield and is a legal target for Chain Lightning.
  • You have {R}{R}{R} available before starting the line.
  • You can keep choosing to pay {R}{R} as each Chain Lightning copy resolves.

{R}{R}{R} available before the first Chain Lightning resolves.

Sequence

  1. Cast Chain Lightning targeting Smaug, paying {R}.
  2. As Chain Lightning resolves, pay {R}{R} to copy it targeting Smaug.
  3. Chain Lightning deals 3 noncombat damage to Smaug, and Smaug creates 3 Treasures after the spell finishes resolving.
  4. Sacrifice two Treasures for {R}{R}.
  5. Resolve the Chain Lightning copy, pay {R}{R} for the next copy, and repeat.

Interruption Points

  • If Chain Lightning's target becomes illegal, the spell does not resolve and cannot be copied.
  • Players may respond to each copy after it is created on the stack.
  • Damage prevention or removing Smaug breaks the Treasure funding.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug is the damage target that turns each Chain Lightning resolution into 3 Treasures.

Timing: Chain Lightning is sorcery speed.

Rules notes: The first copy payment still needs outside mana because Smaug's Treasures from the original Chain Lightning are created after that spell finishes resolving. Once the first 3 Treasures are available, two Treasures can fund the next copy and the third Treasure is net mana. Repeatable Loop

Commander Spellbook 4629-7839: Pyrohemia near-infinite damage engine

Verified

Near-infinite damage to each creature and player plus repeated Treasure entry, leave, and sacrifice triggers. Life totals bound the repetitions unless prevention, life gain, or another solution keeps the controller alive.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug and Pyrohemia are on the battlefield.
  • You have {R} available to start the first Pyrohemia activation.
  • The table can survive or the controller has a life/prevention solution if the loop needs to continue beyond normal life totals.

{R} to start, then one Treasure can fund each next activation.

Sequence

  1. Pay {R} to activate Pyrohemia.
  2. Pyrohemia deals 1 noncombat damage to Smaug, each other creature, and each player.
  3. Smaug creates one Treasure from the damage dealt to him.
  4. Sacrifice the Treasure for {R} and activate Pyrohemia again.
  5. Repeat while life totals, prevention, and board state allow.

Interruption Points

  • Remove Smaug or Pyrohemia before the next activation.
  • Prevent the damage to Smaug or stop the Treasure from being created.
  • Life totals can end the line before it becomes deterministic.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug is the damage recipient that refunds each Pyrohemia activation with one Treasure.

Timing: Pyrohemia can be activated at instant speed.

Rules notes: Spellbook labels this near-infinite because normal life totals constrain the repetitions. Do not label this infinite unless a life gain or damage-prevention solution is present. Repeatable Loop

Spellbook-listed variant review: Pestilence Treasure engine

Reviewed Research

Near-infinite damage to creatures and players plus repeated Treasure and artifact-sacrifice triggers, bounded by life totals and Pestilence's end-step condition.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug and Pestilence are on the battlefield.
  • You have {B} available to start the first activation.
  • At least one creature remains on the battlefield as Pestilence checks its end-step sacrifice condition.

{B} to start, then one Treasure can fund each next activation.

Sequence

  1. Pay {B} to activate Pestilence.
  2. Pestilence deals 1 noncombat damage to Smaug, each other creature, and each player.
  3. Smaug creates one Treasure from the damage dealt to him.
  4. Sacrifice the Treasure for {B} and activate Pestilence again while life totals and board state allow.

Interruption Points

  • Remove Smaug or Pestilence.
  • Prevent the damage to Smaug.
  • Life totals or Pestilence's end-step condition can stop the line.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug refunds each Pestilence activation with one Treasure from noncombat damage.

Timing: Pestilence can be activated at instant speed.

Rules notes: This variant is kept as reviewed research because the exact Spellbook search confirms the family, while local exact ID mapping remains unresolved. Do not label it infinite without a life/prevention solution. Rules Interaction

Spellbook-listed variant review: Volcano Hellion and Pariah's Shield

Reviewed Research

Large or potentially loop-enabling Treasure creation depending on the exact damage assignment, Pariah's Shield setup, life total, and prevention effects.

Required Cards

Setup

  • Smaug is on the battlefield.
  • Pariah's Shield is attached so damage that would be dealt to you can be dealt to Smaug instead.
  • Volcano Hellion can choose a damage number that does not make the line illegal for the current game state.

Cast and equip Pariah's Shield, then cast Volcano Hellion with enough life and mana for the chosen line.

Sequence

  1. Resolve the Pariah's Shield setup on Smaug.
  2. Resolve Volcano Hellion and choose the damage amount.
  3. Damage assigned or redirected to Smaug is noncombat damage.
  4. Smaug creates Treasures equal to the damage actually dealt after prevention and replacement effects.

Interruption Points

  • Remove Smaug, Pariah's Shield, or Volcano Hellion's target.
  • Prevent or replace the damage to Smaug.
  • Life total constraints and damage assignment must be reviewed before public infinite language.

Smaug the Impenetrable role: Smaug is the equipped damage recipient that turns redirected noncombat damage into Treasures.

Timing: Equip is sorcery speed unless another effect attaches Pariah's Shield. Volcano Hellion's enters trigger resolves once unless copied or blinked.

Rules notes: This is intentionally stored as rules_interaction, not infinite, until exact requirements are reconciled locally. Treasure count follows only damage actually dealt to Smaug.
